JUDO SUCCESSFULLY LANDS IN JAMAICA

Judo has official arrived to the Jamaican Island. The first ever judo session took place at the Cumberland Community Centre in St. Catharine and was delivered by 2016 Rio Olympian, Szandra Szogedi. Children across various age groups were able to enjoy an introductory class to judo. In addition, an adult class was also delivered by former International judoka, Szogedi.

Szogedi expressed her thoughts about their opening day: “I was really impressed how the local community was supporting the project. We had kids literally coming in off the street to try judo. Shortly after they left the dojo, we received phone calls and requests in regards to more judo classes. We saw talents, we saw fire in the eyes and most importantly plenty of joy on the tatami. The adult session also impressed me, with moms with no form of martial arts background joining on the mat and lads walking long distance just to be at the training. The nation’s dedication and open mindedness spoke for itself. I consider our trip to St. C

atharine as a very successful beginning of this wonderful journey.”

The President of the Judo Federation, Mr. Dwayne Barnett was also on the mat assisting all training sessions.

“The first day of judo we had three classes and I thought all three classes were incredible. We had nine children to start off with which was followed by another 11 on our doorstep. Everyone was really enthusiastic and learned the techniques really quickly. From what I have seen today, the signs are very encouraging for the future of judo in Jamaica. We would like to thank Fighting Films for supporting this project.”

The crew will continue their journey to Kingston and Montego Bay. Moreover, they will visit local primary schools to deliver motivational speeches and bring the awareness of judo across the Island.
